MDRRMO Historical Journey
Establishment of MDRRMO
Following the enactment of Republic Act 10121, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Magsaysay was formally established. The office initially operated with minimal staff and resources, focusing on basic disaster response and coordination.
Formation of MDRRMC
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) was formed, composed of representatives from various local government offices, national agencies, civil society organizations, and private sector groups. This council serves as the policy-making body for disaster risk reduction and management in the municipality.
Hazard Mapping Project
In partnership with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), MDRRMO Magsaysay conducted comprehensive hazard mapping of the entire municipality. This project identified flood-prone areas, landslide susceptibility zones, and other potential hazards, which became the basis for risk reduction planning.
Community-Based DRRM
MDRRMO initiated community-based disaster risk reduction and management programs in all 12 barangays of Magsaysay. This included organizing Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs) and conducting regular training and drills.
Response to Typhoon Nona
When Typhoon Nona (international name: Melor) struck Occidental Mindoro in December 2016, MDRRMO Magsaysay coordinated emergency response operations, including pre-emptive evacuations, distribution of relief goods, and damage assessments. This event tested the municipality's disaster preparedness and highlighted areas for improvement.
Establishment of Operations Center
A dedicated Municipal Disaster Operations Center was established, equipped with communication systems, monitoring equipment, and emergency response facilities. This center serves as the hub for disaster coordination and response activities.
School-Based DRRM Program
MDRRMO partnered with the Department of Education to implement school-based disaster risk reduction programs. This included conducting earthquake drills, establishing school disaster management committees, and integrating DRRM concepts in school curricula.
COVID-19 Response
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, MDRRMO Magsaysay took the lead in the municipality's pandemic response. This included implementing quarantine protocols, managing isolation facilities, distributing relief assistance, and coordinating vaccination programs.
Regional Recognition
MDRRMO Magsaysay received the Seal of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Compliance from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) MIMAROPA, recognizing the municipality's efforts in building disaster resilience.
Enhanced Early Warning System
With funding from the national government, MDRRMO Magsaysay installed an enhanced early warning system in high-risk areas. This includes automated rain gauges, water level sensors, and a community-based warning system that provides timely alerts to residents.
